Reboot – Birmingham / Leeds
Reboot is born from a desire to create a model of artist exchange that helps to create better connections between artists/curators/producers in different cities. For the first event – Live Art Bistro and Home For Waifs And Strays will host the one other, each in their respective cities of Leeds and Birmingham, bringing emerging artists to experience new places, meet new people and show their work to new audiences. Our key aim is to provide the potential for new ideas to form, new friends to be made and maybe even new inter-city collaborations.
On the 12th August HFWAS host LAB at Vivid Projects for the Birmingham part of the exchange. On the 14th August LAB will host HFWAS at Enjoy Art Space for part two.
Home For Waifs And Strays began in July 2013 as a project by Aleks Wojtulewicz and Kate Spence, two live artists born in and based in Birmingham. Their motivation is to create a community of live artists in the city, to increase opportunities for emerging practitioners to show work and to engage a wider audience. Since then they have begun to build these things through using public spaces, central venues, open calls, mentorship and sheer persistence. They have now received their first commission and have been given a temporary space, Unit 9 at Minerva Works, that has enabled them to work even more closely with local artists, to have greater freedom of content in shows and now to begin more artist exchange between other cities.
Live Art Bistro (LAB) is an artist led venue and curatorial project based in Leeds. The aim of LAB is to support and develop Live Art practices for the benefit of artists, audiences and community groups and to explore alternative models of cultural production, rather than a one-size-fits-all approach lended to many large organisations. LAB aims to be reflective and responsive-to the needs of artists working in Live Art and Contemporary Performance in Leeds whilst having a perspective that translates both regionally and nationally.
Live Art Bistro is currently in residence at Enjoy Art Space in Mabgate and plans to roll out a programme of events continuing into 2015.
LAB has worked in partnership with East Street Arts, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Live Art Development Agency, Compass Live Art & LS14 Trust.
