Raising the Skirt: Lament and Dissent
Come and join as at P Cafe where we will be live screening an action by Raising the Skirt to protest the Presidency of Donald Trump at the exact moment of his inauguration.
‘We cannot stand silently, head down as the world accepts a vile, hate fuelling, racist misogynist as president of United States of America. Here in England we are still reeling from the effects of Brexit seeing our country led by hate and fear. We watch daily as people struggle, suffer and die as a result of our military intervention and a lack of our humanitarian intervention. Through out time, when all were consumed with fear and great grief, at moments of upheaval women were asked to come, to keen, to wail and to channel the collective emotion that had no words. On January 20th at the exact moment that Trump is inaugurated we will gather, we will rage, we will howl. As women we must unite. We will use our presence, our voices and if each chooses, our bodies to lament, to rage, to keen. We will evoke the strength of our foremothers which has long been suppressed and raise as one voice in solidarity of our sisters oppressed. We will not be silenced.’
Raising the Skirt will be holding a workshop the day of the action. They will be exploring the narratives of Raising the Skirt along with traditional expressions of lament and dissent. They will be working with different practitioners to explore breath, voice, sound making and how to transform rage, grief and fear into a deep primal sound that will reverberate through the streets of Newcastle during the action. The action/reaction will also be live streamed inviting anyone into our action, our rage and our transformation.
Home For Waifs And Strays are screening the action on 20th January at 5pm at P Cafe. The cafe is open beforehand and we will be staying after the action for any performers, artist, poets or anyone who wants to bring their responses and voices to this event.
Raising the Skirt are artists Nicola Hunter and Dawn Felicia Knox
